GarageBand audio output issue when using Picture in Picture (PiP) on iPhone
Device
- iPhone 17
- iOS 26.5.1
- Latest version of GarageBand
Issue
GarageBand loses audio output after interacting with Picture in Picture (PiP) or another media playback app.
The project continues playing normally:
- Playback cursor continues to move.
- Level meters continue to animate.
- Instruments and tracks continue processing.
However, no sound is output from the speaker.
Steps to reproduce
- Launch GarageBand.
- Start playback.
- Start a Picture in Picture (PiP) video.
Result
GarageBand displays “GarageBand has stopped” and playback is interrupted.
Case 2
- Start a PiP video.
- Open GarageBand.
- Start playback in GarageBand.
- While GarageBand is playing, resume or interact with the PiP video.
- Stop the PiP video.
Result
GarageBand continues playing internally, but no audio is output.
The playback cursor and audio level meters continue moving normally.
Expected behavior
After PiP playback stops, GarageBand should regain the audio session and continue outputting sound normally.
Additional information
This behavior did not occur previously on the same device. It began after repeated use of GarageBand together with PiP/background media playback.
I have already tried:
- Restarting the iPhone
- Reinstalling GarageBand
- Resetting all iPhone settings
Resetting all settings resolved a separate issue involving screen recording audio, but this PiP-related audio output problem remains.
This appears to be related to audio session recovery after interruption rather than project playback itself, because the playback engine continues to run while only the audio output is lost.
