can't enter time machine

Hi,

After having upgraded my Lion to 10.7.5, I can't enter or launch Time Machine. The periodical

back-up seems to be working fine (I can't check the contents now, though.)

Apparently my TimeMachine.app has been broken. Are there any ways to fix this problem?

MacPro (1,1), Lion 10.7.5,

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Thank you for the reply, sanjose-san

I had tried to open the folders to find no issues. No wonder, since backing-up had been working fine by then, too.

I logged off/on, and rebooted, and now I can open Time Machine.app. I don't know which action has fixed the problem.

So, as for the MacPro and back up to an internal HDD, the problem seems to have been resolved.

I, however, got yet another Time Machine related issue for MacBook Air and an external HDD. This time, the backing up is so slow, and would never finish. After upgrading to 10.7.5, 4 GB was to be backed-up, and of which only 1.5 GB were backed up after three hours. Then, I initialize the external HDD, and started over the back-up. At very beginning, it seemed working fine, but it slowed down after 4GB and now to have stalled altogether at 4.8 GB (36.2 GB to be backed up in all.) The access lump of the HDD suggests that the access to the disk is very rare and intermittent.

Is this a feature or something we can improve?

otacky_taka-san,

It is good that your Mac Pro's problem is resolved.

I have MacBook Air, too. But I have not experienced this kind of problem.

How about following ways (in case that you connect external HD by USB)

a) change connecting USB slot on MacBook Air.

b) connect an external HDD directly if you use a USB Hub.

I hope this would be help.

While I have been struggling with the issue, I found that spotlight progress bar said that it would take seven "days" to complete the search. Apparently, the spotlight search and TimeMachine are competing. I killed the spotlight search following the instruction by <http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/10/disable-or-enable-spotlight-in-mac-os-x-lion/> and erased the backup HDD entirely and started over the backup. Now, it has got through the mid point (18 GB) and there is no sing of slowing down. Phew!

When I started backing up my MBA with this external HDD one year before, this did not happen, and until today, incremental back ups (every or every other week) went smoothly. So, I suspect the latest OS update caused the spotlight/TimeMachine contention, and hope Apple should come up with a smart fix about this.
